What does a fractional CTO do?
A fractional CTO provides senior technology leadership on an agreed part-time basis. The role can cover priorities, architecture, budgets, delivery oversight, and technical hiring guidance. The responsibilities and time commitment are agreed around your business needs.
When should a startup or growing business hire a fractional CTO?
It can be useful when technology decisions are becoming costly or complex, but a full-time leadership role is not yet the right fit. Common starting points include planning an MVP, reviewing a struggling delivery programme, coordinating vendors, or creating a roadmap for growth.
How is a fractional CTO different from a development agency?
A development agency primarily delivers scoped work. A fractional CTO helps your leadership team decide what to build, assess trade-offs, and oversee delivery across people and vendors. Can you review an existing codebase or a delayed software project?
We can scope a technical and delivery review using the access and documentation available. The aim is to identify risks, dependencies, and practical next steps. A review is not a guarantee that every defect will be found, and specialist testing may need a separate engagement.
How much time will a fractional CTO spend with our team?
The cadence depends on the decisions and delivery support you need. We agree on meeting frequency, availability, responsibilities, and communication channels before starting. Advisory support is different from day-to-day delivery leadership or an on-call support service.
What is the difference between CTOx Engaged and Advisor?
